As someone who grew up surrounded by nature, loving the outdoors comes naturally to me. It’s no wonder I fell in love with this century-old banyan tree in Hawaii. The tri-level home built among its branches truly creates a haven of serenity unlike any other. I’ll just go ahead and say it. 10 out of 10, I would stay at this treehouse in Hawaii again!
Arrival and First Impressions
It took a short 20-minute drive to get to the treehouse from Honolulu’s airport. I followed my GPS into an easily accessible neighborhood and parked in a designated space right outside the driveway. I walked along a towering wooden gate until I found the entrance. A little lift on the latch, and the door slowly opened.
I didn’t quite know what to expect when I got there, but I certainly wasn’t expecting this.

Accommodations and Amenities
The layout of this tri-level treehouse in Hawaii is well-designed. The first floor is all open air. It has a fully equipped, modern kitchen with bar seating. There is also a lounge area with hammock chairs that overlook a portion of the Honolulu skyline. This is where I watched Waikiki’s Friday night fireworks during the first evening of my stay. (Yes! You can see the Waikiki fireworks from the treehouse!)
From the first floor, there are three places you can go:

Living Room
From the lounge area, the u-shaped stairs lead to the second floor where the living room is located. The first thing you’ll notice are the majestic tree limbs coming out of the floors and walls. These massive beauties grow through the front of the large open deck, their leaves providing shade and privacy. There is a cozy daybed in this living space. There’s also a pair of rocking chairs, a dining table and set of hanging hammock seats. Continuing on, there are more stairs nestled within the tree’s sprawling branches. They lead to the third level where the bedroom is located.

Bedroom
From the kitchen, the spiral staircase leads to a balcony and full bathroom. The walk-in rain shower is pretty epic with a limb growing through one window and out the other. Continuing on through beaded curtains, there’s a set of ladder stairs. These stairs go to the third floor where the bedroom is located. The other side of the bedroom has a set of stairs leading down into the living room.

Outdoor Space
Between the kitchen and lounge area, a pathway lined with flowers leads to the other side of the property. That’s where the yoga deck, hot tub, firepit, and picnic tables are located. There’s even a REAL mango tree. Quite honestly, the best mango I ever tasted came from this tree. The fun part is picking them from its limbs. Trust me, it’s not as easy as it looks.

Ambiance and Atmosphere
The treehouse’s design seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings, allowing me to feel connected to nature without sacrificing comfort. From the carefully chosen furnishings and luxury finishes to the high-end amenities, every detail has been thoughtfully curated. The Mahina Treehouse is surrounded by beautiful jungle-like flora, creating a private oasis.
It’s hard to believe you’re so close to the hustle and bustle of the city below. The sounds of the birds chirping and the leaves rustling in the refreshing breeze set the tone for my stay. Pair that with the spectacular views and what you’ve got is a nature lovers paradise. Views of the sunrise and sunset, Honolulu cityscape, and iconic Diamond Head crater can be seen from the entire property.
Activities and Exploration
There are plenty of activities nearby this treehouse in Hawaii. From hiking and snorkeling to shopping and dining, you don’t have to drive far to indulge in all the island lifestyle has to offer.
Service and Hospitality
The owner, Jose, is a kind-spirited person. When he talks about his treehouse in Hawaii, his passion is evident. I mean, it is quite magnificent. Overall, he was very welcoming and a great resource for recommendations on local activities.
A couple of things to note. The treehouse shares the property with the owner, his family, and his other rental spaces. His friendly, laid-back poodle will likely greet you during your stay. While these aspects of the accommodation may not be ideal for some guests, it didn’t take away from my experience at all. In fact, it felt more authentic.
